Migraine headache

Effective Ayurvedic Treatment for Migraine

Migraine is a type of headache that causes a throbbing pain on one side of your head. Usually, it is accompanied by nausea, vomiting, extreme sensitivity towards light and sound. Sometimes it disrupts your daily activity and can attack for hours or days.

Some people may experience a warning symptom called Aura before experiencing their migraine. Aura may include spotting different colors of rings around light or blind spots. Sometimes it can be a tingling sensation on your arms or head. Migraine affects 12% of the population. In the ancient text of Ayurveda, migraine is referred to as ARDHAVABHEDAKA.

■   What Causes Migraine?

Migraine is a neurological condition that affects nerve signals, chemicals and blood vessels in your brain. It can occur in childhood, adolescence or early adulthood. It may attack you in 4 stages, or in some cases, it may not happen in stages. Stages of your migraine include prodrome, aura, attack, and postdrome stages.

The exact reason for the migraine is unknown. But genetics, brain functions and involvement of trigeminal nerves are certainly present in its cause. One of the chemicals that are present in your brain, called serotonin, certainly affects the pain in migraine.

There are some triggering factors that cause migraine, which include emotional, physical, diet, environmental, certain medications, hormonal changes, stress, etc.

■  Ayurvedic treatments for Migraine

Ayurvedic treatment of migraine at Suveda Ayurveda starts with giving prior importance to its diagnosis.
It includes finding your imbalanced dosha. According to Ayurveda, the important doshas that are vitiated are Vata and kapha. In some classic texts, tridosha vitiation is also mentioned. Once proper identification of dosha vitiation is made by our expert doctors, treatment of your migraine is guided based on that.

Our effective ayurvedic treatment for migraine protocol includes panchakarma with more importance to Vasti and Nasya, Abhyanga( massage using medicated oil), Snehapana, etc., along with all these external treatments. We also prefer yoga, a few dietary changes, and lifestyle modifications.

With panchakarma, we try to eliminate the excess vitiated doshas from your body. Before panchakarma, intake of medicated oil or ghee is advised for the proper elimination of doshas from your body. An important treatment for ardhavabhedaka is Nasya, in which medicated oil or ghee is inhaled through your nostrils which helps in both the elimination of doshas and relief from your pain. Recurrence of ardhavabhedaka can be stopped using the intake of Rasayana therapy along with yoga and lifestyle changes
